Śrīla Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswāmī Mahārāj describes Śrī Guru’s mercy on Śrī Guru Pūrṇimā.
Today is Śrī Guru Pūrṇimā and the first day of Chāturmāsya, the four month monsoon season in India. In honour of this day, we are presenting a new verse from the Temple of Love and Affection that relates to this theme.
Temple of Love and Affection Verse 10
varṣāyāṁ vai sajala-jalado vādayan mandra-bheriṁ
yadvad-viśve bhramati bahudhā vāridhārāṣcha varṣan
tadvad-bhūmau bhramasi sagaṇair ghoṣayan gaura-gāthā
nityaṁ divyāmṛta-sukaruṇāṁ tvaṁ hi deva! pravarṣan
(Śrī Guru-Praśasti: 6)
“As a rain-cloud circles in the sky during the rainy season playing its base kettle-drum and profusely showering torrents of rain, so you wander on the earth accompanied by your associates proclaiming Śrī Gaura’s glories and eternally showering divine, nectarean mercy, O lord!”
Early during the monsoon season of 2006, Śrīla Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswāmī Mahārāj described this verse as follows on a stormy day as rain poured down outside his veranda:
Now it is varṣa kāl, the rainy season. I composed a śloka in during this seaon about the rain and Guru Mahārāj’s preaching style.
varṣāyāṁ vai sajala-jalado vādayan mandra-bheriṁ
yadvad-viśve bhramati bahudhā vāridhārāṣcha varṣan
tadvad-bhūmau bhramasi sagaṇair ghoṣayan gaura-gāthā
nityaṁ divyāmṛta-sukaruṇāṁ tvaṁ hi deva! pravarṣan
(Śrī Guru-Praśasti: 6)
“During the rainy season the clouds are full of water. They round about surrounding everything and rain down their water. Like these clouds, you also round about, surround everything and rain down your mercy. Nityaṁ divyāmṛta-sukaruṇāṁ tvaṁ hi: you cast your merciful glance everywhere and enrich everyone with Krishna consciousness.”
I composed this verse on a train. Once, when I was coming from Nabadwīp by train and it began to rain very hard, this inspiration came to me.
