To Whom Shall I Convey My Joy?

Śrīla Bhakti Siddhānta Saraswatī Ṭhākur expresses his joy and sorrow at completing his commentary on Śrī Chaitanya-charitāmṛta.

Śrīla Bhakti Siddhānta Saraswatī Ṭhākur completed his commentary on Śrī Chaitanya-charitamṛta less than one year after Śrīla Bhakti Vinod Ṭhākur departed, and to conclude the commentary, he wrote a poem expressing the attachment to Śrīla Bhakti Vinod Ṭhākur he felt in separation. Śrīla Bhakti Rakṣak Śrīdhar Dev-Goswāmī Mahārāj specially requested that this poem be recited on the disappearance day of Śrīla Saraswatī Ṭhākur. While describing the events that took place on that day, he counted: “Prabhupād had his Anubhāṣya on Chaitanya-charitamṛta, and at the conclusion, he composed a poem in a very sweet and very lamenting temperament. I asked to read that poem of his and it was read.” (830104)

chāri-śata unatriṁśe    jyaiṣṭhe dina ekatriṁśe
    chaitanyābde, māsa—trivikrama
śrī-vraja-patane thāki’    ‘gaurahari’ bali’ ḍāki’
    dayita-dāsiyā narādhama [1]
navadvīpa māyāpure    prabhu-gṛha-nātidūre
    anubhāṣya kaila samāpana
śrī-gaura-kiśora-dāsa    samprati kuliyā vāsa
    yā̐ra bhṛtya—ei abhājana [2]

On the 31st day of Jyaiṣṭha during the month of Trivikrama in the year 429 of the Chaitanya era (14 June 1915), residing in Śrī Vraja Patan not far from the Lord’s home in Māyāpur of Śrī Nabadwīp Dhām, while  calling out, “Gaurahari” and serving his beloved, this fallen soul, the unfit servant of Śrī Gaura Kiśora Dās who resides at present in Kulia, has completed a supporting commentary (an anubhāṣya on Śrī Chaitanya-charitāmṛta).

āji ei sukha-dine    bhakati-vinoda vine
    sukha-vārtā jānāba kāhāre ?
‘anubhāṣya’ śuni’ yei    parama praphulla ha‑i’
    uru-kṛpā vitarila more [3]

Today, on this joyful day, to whom shall I convey this joyful news without Śrī Bhakti Vinod? He listened to this Anubhāṣya, was extremely pleased, and bestowed great mercy upon me.

tā̐hāra karuṇā-kathā    mādhava-bhajana-prathā
    tulanā nāhika tribhuvane
tā̐ra sama anya keha    dhariyā e nara-deha
    nāhi dila kṛṣṇa-prema-dhane [4]

There is no comparison within the three worlds to his merciful teachings of the practice of devotion to Kṛṣṇa. No one has ever assumed a human form and distributed the wealth of divine love for Kṛṣṇa like him.

sei prabhu-śakti pāi’,    ebe ‘anubhāṣya’ gāi’
    ihāte āmāra kichchhu nāi
yāvat jīvana rabe,    tāvat smariba bhāve
    nitya-kāla sei pada chāi [5]

Receiving power from him, my master, I now sing this Anubhāṣya, within which there is nothing of my own. As long as I live, I will remember him within my heart. I eternally aspire for his feet.

gadādhara-mitra-vara    śrī-svarūpa-dāmodara
    sadā kāla gaura-kṛṣṇa yaje
jagatera dekhi’ kleśa    dhariyā bhikṣuka-veśa
    aharahaḥ  kṛṣṇa-nāma bhaje [6]

The dear friends Śrīla Gadādhar Paṇḍit and Śrīla Svarūp Dāmodar eternally worship Gaura and Kṛṣṇa. Seeing the suffering of the world, they assumed the form of mendicants and constantly chanted the Name of Kṛṣṇa.

śrī-gaura kṛpāya dui    mahimā ki kaba mui
    aprākṛta-pāriṣada-kathā
prakaṭa ha-iyā seve    kṛṣṇa-gaurābhinna-deve
    aprakāśya kathā yathā tathā [7]

They (Śrīla Bhakti Vinod Ṭhākur and Śrīla Gaura Kiśor Dās Bābājī Mahārāj) are manifestations of Śrī Gaura’s mercy. What can I say about their greatness? They are divine associates of the Lord (they are manifestations of Śrīla Gadādhar Paṇḍit and Śrīla Svarūp Dāmodar). They appeared and served Lord Kṛṣṇa’s nondifferent form Śrī Gaura. Such an expression is not to be spoken anywhere and everywhere.

śrī-gaurāṅga-nija-jana    bhakati-vinoda-gaṇa
    aprākṛta-bhāve yā̐ra sthiti
‘anubhāṣya’ sayatane    pāṭha kara bhakta-sane
    lābha kara yugala-pīriti [8]

O souls surrendered to Śrī Gaurāṅga! O followers of Śrī Bhakti Vinod, who are situated in divine consciousness! Read carefully this Anubhāṣya with devotees and attain love for the Divine Couple.

In Heart and Halo, Śrīla Śrīdhar Mahārāj discusses this poem as follows:

“He has seen in Bhakti Vinod Ṭhākur the fullest representation of the cult of Śrī Gaurāṅga. This realisation is expressed in his poem where he says that he saw Svarūp Dāmodar Goswāmī in Gaura Kiśor Dās Bābājī, and Śrī Gadādhar Paṇḍit in Śrīla Bhakti Vinod Ṭhākur.… In his poem at the conclusion of his Śrī Chaitanya-charitāmṛta commentary, he has written: “Here, in Nabadwīp Dhām, the eternal Pastimes are going on continuously. Only those who have got that deep vision can perceive it.

jagatera dekhi’ kleśa    dhariyā bhikṣuka-veśa
    aharahaḥ  kṛṣṇa-nāma bhaje [6]

prakaṭa ha-iyā seve    kṛṣṇa-gaurābhinna-deve
    aprakāśya kathā yathā tathā [7]

He says, “It is very difficult to perceive the sweet will of Śrī Gaurāṅga, but if we can lift ourselves to that level, we see that Svarūp Dāmodar Goswāmī and Śrī Gadādhar Paṇḍit are always engaged in their service here in Nabadwīp. Sometimes it is suppressed, and sometimes it is appearing on the surface. In that plane all is going on by the sweet will of Śrī Gaurāṅga, without any restriction. But now I find that those two have appeared on the surface as Śrīla Gaura Kiśor Dās Bābājī and Śrīla Bhakti Vinod Ṭhākur. I have seen it with my own eye of divine service, but this is not to be advertised, not to be given, publicity anywhere and everywhere. People will laugh at it. But this is my heartfelt conclusion.” He has written this in his poem concluding Śrī Chaitanya-charitāmṛta.
